The Multicultural Students Association hosted this morning’s Martin Luther King, Jr. assembly. In this photo, the afternoon dance program performs a piece set to a Mahalia Jackson song, covered by Aretha Franklin. There is a story that Jackson, a gospel singer and friend of King’s, was at the 1963 March on Washington when King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. From the crowd she shouted to him, “Tell them about the dream, Martin!” at which point he improvised the famous words. Read more in a New York Times article here.
